Spread the love
I got a couple e-mails asking about the sprinkle cake I made for David’s birthday. It is really simple and I’ll break it down for you.
I wasn’t planning on doing this post and so, these pics really aren’t the best. They are from my phone so they are a little blurry. Also, I apologize for the clutter in the background =/ We had an eventful weekend before David’s birthday so no really time to clean more than just the dishes..
Alright, well for starters, I love cooking & baking but am in no ways a great cake decorator (you can tell by how not smooth that buttercream frosting is lol). Because of this, I knew I wanted to pick something that was extremely simple, but still cute.
For the cake, I bought the Betty Crocker box mix of Devil’s Food Cake.
I love this cake! If you keep it covered it gets soo moist with in an hour! I do sometimes make my cakes from scratch using the recipe on the back of the Hershey’s cocoa box, which is a great, but also very dense cake. This time I chose a box mix to keep it simple since I was making tons of cupcakes for the party and was also making a bunch of other side dishes from scratch.
The lady who actually made my sister’s gorgeous wedding cake said she uses Betty Crocker too. When it comes down to it, cake is cake. What really makes the difference is the frosting and filling if you choose to do one.
For the Buttercream Frosting I did this:
1 cup butter
4 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
I didn’t do the half vegetable shortening, I just like the taste of all butter better.. One tip I read was that if you want to do all butter buttercream, you can add a tablespoon of cornstarch to help the frosting stay firm.
When frosting, one thing I learned is that it is important to do what’s called a crumb coat first. It just locks in all the crumbs so that you get a nice clean looking frosting layer on the outside. Now, you can tell from my pictures that the frosting isn’t completely smoothed. That is because I’m an amateur, but I think the imperfections made it look even cuter.
(Funny Fact: I actually was able to get the frosting a little smoother, but since it wasn’t 100% perfectly smooth, I added some rough spots. So yes, I made it not smooth on purpose. Weird, I know. I just didn’t want it to look like I tried too hard to get it smooth..)
After you finish the crumb coat, you want to put the cake in the fridge for about a half hour before you do the final coat. It will help it get nice & firm, making it easier to frost the last coat.
The sprinkles were so easy. All you do is just lightly press them in with your hands about half way up & you’re done!
I told you it was easy!! The plate it is on I actually picked up at the dollar store & then glued it to a candlestick to make a cheap cake holder.
Hope this post helped you with some cake decorating ideas!!
